Moving, Avengers, and a Sermon Recap

Hey guys, there’s a few things on my mind. So let’s do this.
1) SUMMERTIME ANNOUNCEMENT!! We are MOVING! Starting this Sunday at 5PM we are gathering at the luxurious Ole Miss BSU. We are so excited about this opportunity to meet in a great space that will give us a chance to save some money this summer while reaching out to lots of new people. It’s a win-win! Hope you will join us for this awesome gathering, especially those of you who will be going home soon! I know many of you will be busy with Finals madness and Swayze Craziness, but this is going to be an incredible gathering. And there will be food. See you there. AND BRING A FRIEND! Just go watch us clinch the series with LSU, and then walk right across the street and come find us! It’ll be great!
2) Do you feel especially geeky this week? I know I do. I can’t believe that we are just a few days away from the Avengers movie. This is a comic book movie on a whole new level – a crossover nerd-fest that should have never been made! If you know anything about the amount of red tape that producers and directors have to wade through to get just one of these movies made, it’s kind of amazing that this movie exists. Even better than simply existing, it seems like they have made it awesome! From all the stuff I have heard, I will suggest to you that you see this movie with a group of friends, and in a packed theater if possible. It sounds like it’s going to be one of those increasingly rare, magical theater experiences where the crowd’s reaction is as fun as the film! It’s going to be huge.
3) We finished off our ‘Church and Cross’ series this Sunday. It’s been a difficult study, because really studying the actions and words of Jesus has thoroughly messed with some of my religious assumptions. This week we looked at Jesus’ view of ministry success, and it was clear that Jesus’ goal in preaching was often to reveal painful truths to His hearers. The most painful – and helpful – truth that Jesus communicated in the 6th chapter of John was that many of the people who were hearing Him speak didn’t truly love Him. They liked Him, were curious about Him, or wanted a show from Him – but that wasn’t the same as truly loving Him and being His disciple. Jesus frequently seemed to run off ‘would-be followers’ who were after Him for selfish reasons, instead of congratulate them for being mildly interested in what He had to say.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that Jesus is constantly challenging these people’s commitment and devotion to Him. This is still true today. Our nation is full of churches that are full of people who would absolutely say that they “LOVE Jesus,” but I think Jesus would have some pretty pointed questions for us. It’s so easy to say words and sing beautiful phrases about our love for Him, but do our lives match up with the declarations we make? This is obviously important to Him, because Jesus came to reveal to us what love truly looks like, and He doesn’t want people to be confused about ‘following’ Him. One of the best things we can take from the words of Jesus is the staggering realization that we don’t really love Him like we should. This understanding will either cause us to reject Him or repent to Him, and as He tells the lukewarm church in Revelation, either response is better than the apathy that defines many ‘Christians’ today.
I know that’s a lot to process, but if you want to hear more about it, we are going to post the sermon soon. Give it a listen, and more importantly – give these ideas some thought:
Do I really love Jesus?
Am I hungry for Jesus?
Do I ‘follow’ Jesus for selfish reasons?
Will I reject Him or Repent to Him?
See you Sunday at the BSU!
